Axel Friedrich was born 1967 in Krefeld, has been employed as a research assistant at the Department for Sculptural Design at RWTH Aachen University since 2001, and as a scientific assistant since 2019 as a research assistant at the Department of visual arts at RWTH Aachen University. After training as a stonemason and sculptor specialising in church restoration and sculpture (apprenticeship examination), he also worked on restoration and conservation measures in the field of building sculpture during his civilian service at Ludwigstein Youth Castle. From 1991-1994 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Münster with Prof. Joachim Bandau, then, until 1997, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf with Prof. Tony Cragg (degree: Akademiebrief und Meisterschülertitel). Until 2001 he worked as a freelance sculptor with commissions in the field of sculpture restoration and gravestones, as well as a modeller for three-dimensional design models, dummies and prototypes in the field of objects and figures.
Since 1996 he has worked continuously as a freelance artist with exhibitions at inland and abroad.
